This self portrait is for the SRQ contest. I had no idea what I wanted to do, so I just decided to look through my photos. I found this, which I felt was perfect with the odd but dramatic shadow across my face. I especially liked the color palette in this piece, since I had put a filter over that caught the blues and reds and made them show more brilliantly. I ha fun shading the face because of this, because it wasn't just the regular skin colors. I also really enjoyed doing the stripes, since it really adds depth to the piece in a way. The hair was the worst part, because drawing realistic hair is always way too details, and I just couldn't get the highlight in the hair as thin as I wanted to with a paintbrush or any other medium. All in all, I think the piece does look a lot like me. And that's saying something, since it's difficult for an artist to capture their own likeness in a piece. One such artist that I looked up to in that regard during this piece's completion was Gustav Courbet, who made a self portrait that captured both a realistic depiction and a feeling of emotion that is impossible to miss.
